This wood engraving was originally made as one of the illustrations for ‘Love Night’ (1936) by Powys Mathers, a limited edition, luxury publication by The Golden Cockerel Press. The engraving ‘Special No 5’, is one of six ‘specials’ produced by the artist for the book and this one also released individually as an edition of twenty. Strong in art deco influence, and darkly and erotically atmospheric, Buckland Wright’s wood engraved illustrations conveyed the tropical setting for Powys Mathers’ ‘Love Night’ to great effect.
